A Royal Charter
Granting of the Royal Charter 1248

What the village think..

St Johns Fayre Witheridge Royal Charter

Witheridge is a small village in rural Devon. St John's Fayre has been an annual event almost continually since being granted a Royal Charter in 1248.

"We, Henry the Third of England, in this year of grace, Twelve Hundred and Forty Eight, grant to you, our loyal servant Robert, son of Payne, Lord of the Manor of Witheridge (and your heirs)

A fayre to be held annually on the Eve, Day and Morrow of the feast of St John the Baptist".

It was a time for buying and selling, eating, drinking, dancing and worship. What you see now is a medieval festival  that has lasted almost 800 years.

It's a snapshot of truly English life.

The procession of children & parents is special.

It's like walking history.

I just love watching the beagles.

We come here every year just for the Fayre.

It's a chance to meet up with people we haven't seen for a long time.

It's a joy to see so many people taking part with such fun and enthusiasm. Witheridge is thriving.

It's a time for renewing friendships and sharing time together.
